Mac and Windows computer keyboards for schools

Mac and Windows computer keyboards for schools

Deciding on the best computer keyboards for your school can be difficult. You may need different types for different use-cases.

The key factors to consider are:

  • Budget (you may need a lot of keyboards!)
  • Space (do you have enough room for full sized keyboards or would a more

compact offering be best?

  • What devices are your students using? Mac, Windows, tablets?
  • Functionality, what features and functions do your students need?

That’s a lot to consider. In this post we’ll give you 6 of the best keyboards for schools. We’ve tried to include enough variety that regardless of your use case you’ll find the keyboard for your school.

Mac Keyboards

Our first 3 options are all geared towards MacOS, perfect for a Mac suite. That’s not to say they can’t be used with Windows computers. In fact, all our keyboards should be relatively plug and play. However, these first 3 come with dedicated MacOS keys such as command and option keys. Perfect for replacing the standard wireless keyboards that come with the latest iMacs

Macally QKEY-UK Full Size

Macally QKEY-UK Full Size

First up we have the Macally QKEY-UK. Macally make keyboards that are specially designed to operate with MacOS. This means they have command and option keys. This QKEY also comes with 16 special keys that will allow you to control the MacOS operating system.

The QKEY is a full-sized, 107 key offering. It’s great for classrooms with a little more desk space. The numpad can be excellent for any class where data input or a lot of numerical work is required.

The Macally QKEY-UK is a versatile and affordable keyboard that will fit in almost any classroom that uses Mac hardware.

Macally Compact Space Grey

Macally Compact Space Grey

If you like the Macally QKEY but don’t quite have the desk space for full sized keyboards, or even want something easier for you or your students to pack up and take elsewhere, then the Macally Compact Space Grey could be the keyboard for you.

As the name suggests, it’s a smaller offering with just 78 keys this time. This smaller form factor doesn’t make it any less useful though. It still has 13 function keys and doesn’t drop any of the most used keys.

The keys look-and-feel is much closer to that of a MacBook. The keys have a shorter key travel than the QKEY. This means, if your students are used to working on laptop keyboards the switch may be easier for them.

Macally Ergonomic USB-A Keyboard

Macally Ergonomic USB-A Keyboard

We wanted to include an ergonomic option in this list. The Macally Ergonomic is a full sized 110 key offering, with 21 shortcut keys for navigating MacOS, and of course the numpad.

But, where this keyboard shines is in its ergonomic design. It has a split keyboard layout so each thumb has a separate space bar. This split design also allows the students’ wrists to lay in a more natural position angled slightly inwards. On top of this, while most keyboards have you typing flat, this keyboard has a natural curve in it, allowing the student to twist their wrists into a more natural typing position. Finally, the Macally Ergonomic also comes with a soft wrist rest. All of these design decisions lead to a much more natural and comfortable typing experience, especially over longer durations that will reduce the risk of injury to your students.

Windows Keyboards

Like the Macally keyboards, while these keyboards are aimed at Windows users, they can also be used by MacOS. Of course, if your school uses both operating systems you can pick from both types of keyboard. However, if you just want one keyboard for all your operating systems, perhaps it is best to pick one for the system that is most commonly used.

Logitech G513 Carbon

Logitech G513 Carbon

What would a roundup of best keyboards be without a mechanical keyboard to add to the list.

A little pricier than most on this list. We’re guessing the Logitech G513 Carbon will probably be a lot closer to the type of keyboard your students will be used to in their home setups.

The default switch type on this model is the tactile GX Brown. This means they keyboard won’t be obnoxiously loud as in many “clicky switches”, but will provide a satisfying tactile bump. These switches are well suited to typists.

The G513 is also made of aircraft grade aluminium so it is plenty robust. And the RGB backlighting is an aesthetic addition too.

While this is a more expensive offering, we wanted to offer it as an option. Students interact with a keyboard a lot, and having a keyboard that they want to type on, that they enjoy typing on, can make all the difference to their output.

Logitech K380 Multi-Device keyboard

Logitech K380 Multi-Device keyboard

Last, but by no means least, we have the compact Logitech K380. This small, lightweight offering is also the only wireless one on our list. That said, battery life shouldn’t be a concern as the K380 boasts up to 2 years on a single charge.

This keyboard is great for multi-device classrooms. As it allows you to connect to 3 devices at once, students can easily switch between a desktop PC, a tablet or even a smartphone.

As with our other compact offering this is another that can be great if you want students to take their keyboards with them, or to easily transfer them from one classroom to the next.
